Loan servicing for CUSOs

Loan Servicing and Agency Software for CUSOs

CUSOs originate, service, and administer commercial loans on behalf of many credit unions at once. LoanStreet gives you one platform to perform that work at scale, and gives each member credit union direct, permissioned access to its own positions whether they are the lead or participant.

Common challenges

Serving many credit unions shouldn’t mean many spreadsheets

01

Limited internal access

Legacy platforms limit loan data to a few people with direct system access. Lending, credit, and leadership within your CUSO, let alone your credit union clients, frequently wait on “reporting” whether through spreadsheets, CSVs or other types of ad hoc reports to answer basic questions about a loan or the entire portfolio.

02

Disparate systems

Commercial loans are tracked across the core and accounting systems, origination tools, underwriting tools, spreadsheets, shared drives, and inboxes. The CUSO itself and each member credit union ultimately reconciles the same loan, borrower financials, risk values and accounting entries over and over again, wasting time and effort across so many different institutions.

03

Limited loan structures

Legacy systems built a generation ago struggle with complex lending, including construction draws, delayed draw term loans, tiered pricing, interest-only periods, or floating rates, among so many different modern commercial credit products – moreover, most of the critical workflows occur over email, spreadsheets, shared drives, shared calendars and other fundamentally manual processes. While the legacy system might, after enough prodding and manual interventions, eventually produce a valid interest accrual or can record one created manually in a spreadsheet, almost all of the real business of lending – the day to day operations and administration – happen outside of the servicing system through manually stitching together multiple tools.

04

Limited participation and syndicate support

Legacy platforms generally limit access to information and often struggle to support the calculations necessary to manage participations. Member credit unions own different portions of different loans, sometimes they are lead, sometimes they are the participant, the servicing spread on interest may not just vary from loan to loan but also different credit unions may have different servicing spreads within the same loan. Servicing spreads may be paid to the CUSO, they may be paid to the lead or both. Capturing the economics of a deal, ensuring payments are made timely along with the need to share borrower financial information is frequently a manually intensive operation. Yet, loan participations especially among commercial and business lending is only growing. Each manual step creates friction, introduces the potential for errors and increases costs. Moreover, the member credit unions cannot easily view their entire portfolio across positions or maintain their own unique custom fields or accounting entries in the legacy system controlled by the CUSO.

05

Third-party agency support

Acting as agent or servicer for member credit unions means distributing payments, notices, and reports to every participant. Most legacy systems were built for a single institution servicing its own book, not for a CUSO servicing someone else’s.

06

No borrower portal

Borrowers send draw requests, payment questions, and covenant documents by email and phone, and your team re-keys every one. There is limited to no self-service across new loan draws, updated contact information, updated bank instructions, covenant document uploads and, in some cases, views of historical or current balances or interest payments or accruals.
